" I even thought about peeing on the dalgona biscuit . "
Yes, they actually did it – real-lifeSquid Gameis coming. With 456 contestants, and $4.56m on the line –Squid Game: The Challengeis bound to be all the rage.
We were lucky enough to sit down with a contestant and the producers to ask about what it was like to compete and produce the real-life version of the hit Netflix drama.
First, we had some questions for one of the ambitious contestants, Lorenzo.
Why did you apply for the show ?
I have a go at it I was the kind of person that should n’t be on this show , they could n’t have write it good [ for me ] . When I keep an eye on the original show , I was like , ' If it was me there , I would ’ve just done the arrant matter in that here and now . I ’d have been more canny than anyone ' . I like to be delusional sometimes , I think it sometimes helps you cope with life sentence .
What did you learn about yourself while competing , did you surprise yourself ?
Honestly , looking back now , I ’m surprised . If you severalise me decently now , that you ’d have to stay still at interval for seven hours in very cold weather , I ’d say no opportunity , no luck in hell . I like warmth , and larboard , and fireplace .
Looking back though , I had some motivation . When you ’re there you really get to think of what ’s important in sprightliness , mainly my ex . That was probably the cock-a-hoop motivator , cause you ’re there like , ' What can I guess of ? ' And I ’ll tell you something , hate is unattackable than love .
Did you ever really experience like there was a life - and - dying element ?
Maybe you wo n’t realise it at house , but being there , it ’s a fully immersive experience . It ’s not some humiliated - quality poppycock , it search legit . So when you ’re in there , almost from the get - go , you ’re in the secret plan .
Emotions run stronger . If I looked at it from a third - party position , I ’d be like … ' why are they crying so early ? ' But really , when you ’re in there , you just feel so much emotion , and everything is enhanced .
Do you have any sorrow about your time in the secret plan ?
You know what – shoulda coulda woulda . I just do n’t cultivate in regrets . For me , everything I do , I think is kind of utter . So I do n’t mean I have any regrets . This is how animation goes . You know , there ’s , there ’s destiny , bigger element act – I do n’t play with god like that .
How did the fresh added games compare to the ones in the master ?
A game like , ' Warships ' was dissimilar from the original series , but at the same time , you ca n’t really have people playact actual forcible games . So I think if Warships was a biz in the original series , it would definitely conform to in .
While you were competing , was there any part of you that want to or could have chisel ?
Every sentence you put me towards something , in any scenario , I will hear and shaft the system and find a way through . I think about them all . I even think about peeing on the dalgona biscuit . But there ’s just no mode you’re able to cheat , it ’s insufferable . But if there was , I would have found it .
Next up we chatted to the creators:
Is it easier or harder to make a game show based on a show people already love ?
I think it ’s both . On the one hand , it gives you so much – it gives you a world , it give you a game , it give you a profile . But it also locks you into a show with 456 contestants . And that ’s a lot of people , so the challenge was how to get hoi polloi to give care about the cast .
Every time we focused on hoi polloi , there was a risk that they would disappear , So passing the nightstick from one character to the next was one of the challenges . On top of that , the cosmos had to be fully immersive . So this is about literal contestant with actual lives , not actors , 456 of them . So they had to think that they were genuinely in the world ofSquid Game .
[ In the pilot ] there ’s a lot that the handwriting would give the hearing that we could n’t swear on – so we had to create some extra game that would lend out moral choices and divulge multitude ’s characters .
It ’s a key challenge to fork over both the greatest hits of the dramatic event and the surprise that was such a tonic of the drama . But in that , we were aid by the fact that already in the secret plan were these sorts of pre - game , where citizenry had to make selection or build alliance or , you know , find fault a bib or choose a shape . We were able to play with the pre - game so that you could still turn in the carpet pulls and still revisit some of the cracking secret plan from the dramatic play .
Was it surprising how long some games took , or was that something that you just altogether anticipated ?
It was n’t surprising because we had to have self-governing adjudication of each person that was eliminated . So that just took a long time because we were videoing people . And then if the mass that were looking at the videos think , ' oh , I think they ’ve move in the wrong way ' , then that had to be checked , and then the chief adjudicator had to check it . Because we were giving away so much money , we had to be scrupulously fair .
When 456 multitude are fiddle a game , and we do n’t know which one someone is going to be the person who walk away with $ 4.56 million , we had to verify that we had coverage of every participant playing the secret plan .
We could freeze the game , but we could n’t go back and do bits of it again . So that intend you have to ensure that when you ’re read it , you get everything you need the first meter because there is no second time .
Did any of the contestant seriously storm you ?
The whole affair that attracted us to it in the first place is that the plot in the drama is an clever mechanism for bring out character under imperativeness . There were lots of multitude who turned out to have surprising slope – that ’s one of the things that attain it rich and interesting to engage with .
The overall surprise , I think , was that it ’s sort of set up to be this warfare of all against all , but there were actually oodles of import of kindness and compassion and solidarity . The range of tones and sort of temper in it was a very positive surprise .
The tone of the audience we had was almost therapy - like . For case , the Mormon guy who talk about his childhood and not understand the jokes that his sib used to make , and being very fleeceable . He was so honorable . That ’s a quality of honesty you do n’t often get inreality shows
